Farmer Kenny had no idea what the hell he had found when he first encountered the giant metal sphere on his new plot of land. He had never seen anything like this before. He wanted to keep it a secret from everybody in case there was something valuable inside that he did not want to share.
But when he finally broke it open, he saw no other option but to call the police…
A chill across his spine
Kenny was shining his flashlight into the darkness inside the metal ball. It had taken hours to break it open, and he was desperately hoping there would be something inside that would make his troubles worth it. But what he actually saw in there sent a chill across his spine.
Calling the police
His hand was shaking, and he was unsure of what to do next. But one thing was for certain: this was more than he could handle on his own. He knew that if he got the police involved, he would face the consequences for keeping his find initially a secret. But he simply did not see any other option…
Arrested
The police came out in numbers after Kenny reported his find, and after they confirmed what was inside the giant metal sphere, Kenny was arrested on the spot…
But what was inside the metal sphere? How had it gone unnoticed for so long, and why did the police have to get involved?
Kenny’s aunt passed away
When Kenny learned that his beloved aunt had passed away shortly, he felt regretted and excited at the same time. Although the news touched him, he had come in quite a bit of inheritance money as well. Being a farmer, Kenny decided to buy the forested terrain next to his fields, a piece of land that hardly anyone ever set foot on…
The old & original owner
The original owner was old, crippled, and alone and thus had done nothing with the area for almost 20 years. It was said to be fertile territory, but the old man had no problem selling it on the cheap to Kenny. It was obvious that this elderly man had no idea what actually was on his land, which also applied to Kenny.
Kenny’s new forest land
When the deal was done, Kenny thought of a plan on how to turn the wilderness that was now in his possession into profitable land. The idea was to first cut away all the vegetation and afterward make it more passable. He just needed the local government's permission, yet, after his bizarre discovery, this proposal would have to wait.
Walking in his forest
On the first day of the land being legally Kenny’s, he was finally allowed to walk on it by himself, and thus he did so to inspect the new property. Apart from the forest being less lively than he expected, there wasn’t much out of the ordinary. But then, something on the side of a rock formation caught his eye.
Big rocks between the trees
He approached it while being somewhat disappointed to see the number of rocks around there. This would make it more difficult than he thought before to turn the area into relatively flat farmland. This sadness, however, quickly turned into confusion when he saw in the rocks something of metal sticking out.
Ax and shovel
When Kenny touched it, he got a shiver all over him. It was clear that he could not take it out just like that, so the farmer decided to go back and forth to his farm shed and bring an ax and shovel to do the work for him. Although the object felt strange, he expected to just dig out the piece of metal in no time. This was not the case.
The metal gigantic object
Whatever this weird metal object was that was dirtying his field, it had to be dug out as quickly as possible. But, as Kenny kept on digging, the object turned out to be absolutely gigantic! The more he kept prying away the dirt, the more the object started to look like an enormous metallic sphere.
A metal sphere
It surprised the farmer, that was for sure, but he was still focussing on his strict plan to turn this territory into profit as fast as he could. Because of this, he did not think much of it yet, other than the thing being a major burden. Yet this burden kept growing, and when most of the dirt was removed, all that was left was a giant cannonball!
Dropping his tools
He dropped his tools to the ground and became now more interested in the purpose of this sphere. What Kenny noticed soon after finding the metal object was that it was mostly hollow. The sound that it made when he hit it with his shovel was unmistakably hollow. Who could have built something like this?
A treasure inside?
Kenny now started to wonder if there could be something hidden in there. Being an opportunist that just wanted to turn his recent investments into profit, he dreamed about what this could yield. The thick metal sheet could be there to protect some sort of treasure inside, but for what purpose?
Keeping it secret
The excited farmer was hesitant about sharing this discovery with anyone. If this was truly something hidden from society and, more importantly, something of great value, Kenny would prefer telling no one about it and keeping it to himself until he knew what it was worth. For potentially opening it, though, he required some help.
Should I upon it?
Kenny was in conflict with himself. On the one hand, he could rent some machinery to break the sphere open, but at the same time, he knew that it could also make him money to sell the sphere unbroken. There could be a way to open it while keeping the metal intact, perhaps with a riddle of some sort…
A local history expert
A decision was made not long after. Kenny needed a second opinion from someone with knowledge, someone that is also a person that he could trust before he could do anything else with this mystery. Luckily he knew an expert in local history that could be able to determine the object’s historical significance.
Kenny called Linda
Ten minutes after, Linda was called when Kenny got back to his office. She was a history teacher whom the farmer had talked to before and someone that seemed to be trustworthy. She claimed to know a fair bit about local historical events, and when he’d told Linda the story, the woman was immediately interested.
The secrecy contract
Both the farmer and the teacher felt it would be best to meet that same afternoon already. But when Linda got to the farmhouse after her final lesson, it got very official immediately. Kenny made her sign a contract of secrecy and had her promise that she would not demand any potential profits.
Linda got excited
Linda found it all a bit extreme, but luckily it made her even more excited about this ‘discovery’ than she was already as well. At the same time, this would not be the first time that she was involved in a scenario in which someone got too carried away with a discovery that, in the end, turned out to be practically worthless.
She signed the papers
She decided to go along with Kenny. Apart from her great curiosity, it helped that she knew the farmer already, and as far as she knew, he had no wicked mind. All Linda knew at this point was that the discovery was on Kenny’s land and that it was literally BIG. And Linda would not be disappointed.
They reached the sphere
They went into the forest only minutes after Linda had signed the papers. Then, when the teacher first laid eyes on the giant metal sphere that was now about half uncovered from the rock, she could barely believe it. Never had she in all her years encountered something like this before. It truly was something special…
Getting her laptop out
Linda checked the material and searched for any engravings present on the sphere. She got her laptop out, and about half an hour later, having done a bit of online research, Linda determined that whatever this sphere was, it was not likely to have any historical significance. Its existence was in studies never mentioned anywhere!
Kenny prepared his equipment
For Linda this meant that a big knowledge gap had appeared, while for Kenny this was all that he needed to know. He had already prepared himself by renting and bringing heavier equipment to break open the thick layer of metal. He was hoping to do this alone, but then Linda indicated that she was not planning on leaving.
Linda convinced Kenny
If he really had to destroy this object, at least she could keep hoping to experience the discovery of what was going to be on the inside of the sphere. She tried to convince the determined farmer. He gave in, since she had already signed the contract of not being allowed to share information about the metal object anyway.
The heavy machines
As Kenny thought about how he was going to execute this operation, he realized that Linda’s help would actually come in very handy. As it turned out, it took much longer with the heavy machines to cut away through the thick metal. Fortunately, when Kenny had to have a small break, Linda could take over every now and then.
Kenny and Linda connected
The two connected more than either of them expected beforehand. It was a tough job but in the process, the pair speculated wildly about what could possibly be in there. Their theories ranged from gold to human remains and everything in between. It had been a while since Kenny was this excited about something.
Was there anything inside?
Whatever it was, they agreed that the giant object had been put there some time ago by a mysterious person or group of people. And these individuals had taken great care that nobody would be able to get to see the inside any time soon. And what if nothing was actually inside? The work would all have been for nothing…
Working 2 hours
Luckily, this would not end up being the case. Kenny and Linda had been back and forth working the cutting machine for two hours before an opening to the inside was finally starting to appear. It turned out that there was definitely something hidden in the sphere, although it was perhaps something that neither of the two hoped to have found.
A small hole
The small and circular hole that the two managed to cut through the metal was slowly increasing in size, although the farmer, as well as the school teacher, were getting more and more exhausted. They had to take a break when the hole was definitely big enough for them to put a hand through.
A strange smell
As they rested against a fallen tree, the two of them noticed that there was a very strange smell coming from the hole that neither of them couldn’t place, something that had never hit their noses before. Even though they couldn’t see anything inside yet, Kenny wanted to put his hand in, but Linda was smarter than that.
Linda’s phone flashlight
She stopped him from moving closer and suggested that they had to cautiously think about what they had to do next. The plan was to first use the flashlight of Linda’s phone so that they could actually see what was inside and determine if it was necessary to cut the hole bigger. The smell got stronger and stronger in the meantime.
Shining the light
When Kenny used the teacher’s phone to shine a flashlight into the dark hole of the sphere, he did not quite understand what he was looking at. He had now been investigating the inside of the sphere for at least a full minute, and the longer he did so, the stranger he started to feel.
Kenny got dizzy
With Kenny getting slightly dizzy and feeling as if he wasn’t getting any wiser from this hole, it was Linda’s turn to take a look. Within seconds she already got an idea of what they were possibly dealing with. When she did so, she stepped back from the metal object as fast as she could.
Calling the police
She immediately turned off the flashlight of her phone and started dialing a number. When Kenny asked what she was doing, she told him that she was going to call the local police, which made the still-confused farmer very angry all of a sudden. He reminded her of the contract she had signed.
Giving coordinates
Even though she’d promised Kenny that she would not tell anybody about their findings, she was now not having any of that. The teacher kept repeating that she had no choice. Before Kenny could snatch the phone out of her hands, she had already given the person at the other end of the line their coordinates.
Linda ran!
Kenny was completely astonished and furious. This was not the deal! He wanted to scream and shout at Linda, but she was already with her bag in her hand, running away towards the edge of his terrain. She shouted that, like she was doing, he should get away from that place as quickly as possible as well.
Kenny in doubt
Kenny was left alone in complete doubt. He trusted Linda’s knowledge on the one hand, so should he leave his findings behind for the police to find out about it? What kept him from doing so was the thought that he should stay and defend that which belonged to him. It was his land, after all.
Police sirens
The poor farmer was not able to make a rational decision on the matter, and before he could do so, the sirens of a police car approaching could already be heard through the woods. Although he would’ve liked to follow Linda and ask why she called the police, he was too late to back out now.
Being light-headed
Kenny was going to have to explain himself to the authorities. But then, as he heard multiple policemen approaching, he suddenly had that strange feeling again. The farmer was getting very light-headed and weak in the knees. He realized that the very odd smell from inside the sphere was still noticeable.
Kenny collapsed!
Before he could do anything about it, Kenny collapsed onto the ground right next to the giant metal object. He could only vaguely make out that a group of men in uniform had come running through the forest his way. When they came closer, the farmer realized that these men weren’t actually wearing normal police outfits.
Handcuffs
The people were making loud noises, screaming around him and at him. Kenny, though, could not understand what the man next to him was saying, nor was he able to reply. Another man put handcuffs on him, he felt, after which the man started to drag him away from the metal sphere.
Steel bars
After that, Kenny could not recall anything anymore. It was the moment that the farmer completely lost consciousness, and the next thing he knew was waking up in an unknown bed while still slightly dizzy. The windows of the room were covered in steel bars, and Kenny felt that he was handcuffed to the bed.
Screaming for help
Kenny’s first thought was that he was kidnapped and so he started screaming for help. He asked loudly what was happening, even though nobody was there with him. When somebody came into the room, Kenny went ghostly wide upon seeing him. Shortly after that, things suddenly started to make some sense to him again.
Sign of radioactiveness
The person did not respond to him at all at first, rather, he walked to the desk to see a couple of test results. This strange figure was covered head to toe in a protective outfit, and the giant sign on his stomach left little to the imagination. It was the sign for “Caution, Radioactive”. Kenny realized that he was in trouble.
Very dangerous
As it turned out, The steel sphere that Kenny had dug up was neither an antique nor did it contain anything particularly valuable. It was, on the other hand, a very unique finding, as it contained something very dangerous that had been well-protected for a reason. How the hell did it end up on Kenny’s land?
Nuclear waste
It was explained to him that the metal sphere was filled with nuclear waste and buried to never be exposed to the environment or any human again. It remained unclear for now who had caused this object to be located in Kenny’s forest, but one thing was for sure: the farmer should have never broken it open.
Radiation exposure treatment
Kenny learned that both he and Linda were now being treated for radiation exposure in a protected part of the police hospital. Even though Kenny had been near that sphere for far longer than necessary, it looked like the exposure of this particular sort, luckily was not as dangerous as they first thought.
Against the law
The radioactive waste was very old and had lost a lot of its radioactivity, as a doctor explained to him. Then, a policeman came in to tell him why he had been handcuffed. Apparently, Kenny would have to explain why he had broken open this hidden metal sphere, as this was very much against the law.
They were innocent!
Fortunately for the farmer, the judge determined a couple of weeks later, when Kenny was treated for his radiation exposure, that the whole thing had been an accident, which meant that Kenny wasn't going to be punished. He and Linda made a complete recovery while the sphere was closed up and buried once again.
